Azawakh Family

February 5, 2013

It is (somewhat) cold and cloudy today. It feels like rain. The puppies are now 8 weeks old. They can manage to scrabble up onto the couch and are very proud of themselves. All four of them are lying together in a pile.

This sort of snuggling behavior is common for Azawakh when the temperature dips a bit. It is quite endearing.

Their bodies are adapted to tolerate the extreme heat of the Sahel and souther Sahara.  Their behavior is adapted to tolerate the cold nights in the desert when the temperatures plunge.

(The couch color was not my choice. It is government issue, I’m afraid.)

Azawakh Family

Afouda and Tazoudi are 6 weeks old this week. It rained most of the past week in Harare and they have had to content themselves with mostly inside time — just visiting the very damp garden between showers. Today the sun has come out and they enjoyed a romp with their sire, Azelouan.

Werner Roeder posted this video of Azawakh among the Tuareg and vassal tribes in Burkina Faso and Niger filmed during the 2000 ABIS expedition.

The trouble is it is damn easy to drive into them. I’ve seen taxis with their front-ends in and their back ends up in the air. I’ve seen the right half of a Land Cruiser go in so the other two wheels are up in the air and the entire car is balanced on its axles.

Yesterday, I saw a big Mercedes lorry go in.

Problem with open sewers... Don't drive off the edge of the road

I don’t know how they got that thing out but it was gone in the morning.

Obstacle

On the way home from school with the kids, I came across a bit of an obstacle in the road. Someone left a bit of machinery parked in my way and went home for the day. What isn’t obvious from the photo is that there were cars piled up behind me blaring and a u-turn is nearly impossible because of the open sewer.

I did manage to get around this behemoth by squeezing between it an the sign on the right.

Evening wrasslin'

At twilight, playful wresting often preceeds warp speet chase gams.

Dog on a Truck

I took this photo with my phone from my car near the new Vodafone head office in Accra, Ghana (one of the big buildings in the background). The dog has some Azawakh-like characteristics but with a major pot belly. Maybe he has a belly full of worms?

Sentinel vs Vandal

Sentinel

Sentinel

Tawzalt is scanning the garden, alert for intruders while I am having a wee dram of the Bowmore 12 on the porch. She is very distrustful of the staff in the neighboring apartment building who enjoy watching us over our garden wall during shift changes. In the background you can just make out our actual night guard in the little guard house.

Vandals

Vandals

When not keeping an eye on the neighborhood, nighttime is a good time for group hole-digging. Zel gets the hole started while Tawzalt inspects his work.

They follow this up whith a high-speed chase game and wrestling match which my phone has no chance of photographing in the pitch black.

I have to wonder where the association between camel and soap came into being. My conception of camel is pretty much the antithesis of soap. I don’t think a soap exists that can de-funkify a camel.

Hmm. Maybe that’s the pitch. This soap is so powerful, it can clean a camel, you should use it on your whole family.

Camel cleaning –> use on the whole family.
